In almost all industries, accidents from tripping, slipping, and falling are an issue.
Every year the commercial economy is strained by
- Approximately 255,000 workplace accidents (this more than 1,000 each work day);
- Approximately 65,000 commuting accidents;
- And approximately 40 fatal accidents.
There are other consequences in addition to the personal suffering of those affected:
- Approximately EUR 330 million in medical treatment and rehabilitation costs for employer’s liability insurance associations;
- Approximately EUR 8 billion in downtime costs for the economy.
The goal of the “Safer Footing” campaign is to reduce the rate of falling, slipping, and tripping accidents by at least 15%.
For this reason, the commercial employer’s liability insurance associations have jointly resolved to carry out a campaign in companies as well as in the public reduce accidents from tripping, slipping, and falling.
The result of the campaign:
26% fewer accidents from tripping, slipping, and falling.
In absolute numbers: in the commercial economy, a total of 191,000 workplace accidents occurred from tripping, slipping, or falling in the year 2022, but two years later there were only 141,000 such accidents.

Tripping, slipping, and falling accidents are the result of movement from people walking and running.
Often an insufficiently labeled walking or running path is the cause of the accidents.
The subject area “Flooring, Stairs” from the “Structural Installations” technical committee of the DGUV focuses on safe walking on traffic routes in inside and outside areas of industrial buildings. One area of focus is on the prevention of accidents from tripping, slipping, and falling, such as with warning markings.
